A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Romance

In this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the fairy community focuses on collecting baby teeth of sleeping children and leaving gold beneath where they sleep. Skateboarding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He’s only slightly more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the ugly gnome he expected.

A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an adventure with a gentle touch of young love (though it’s very much suitable for younger kids). The fairy and goblin groups are estranged from one another, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to unite beings together. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the other. Fairies are said to be entitled sorts, given to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, smelly, and primitive, but are actually intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario needs a common enemy to join forces against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Final Thoughts

There aren’t all that many animated films targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet mature enough for whatever teenagers are watching in lieu of Twilight. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to become their new favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.

The Tooth Fairy Story arrives in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
